How notifications and alerts work

What Sentinel OS notifies you about, the three categories, and what an alert's status means.

Sentinel OS keeps you informed about your cameras, your projects, and your account through notifications. Understanding how they are grouped and what an alert's status means helps you focus on what actually needs attention. This guide explains the model behind them.

Why it matters

Not every notification needs action. Knowing the three categories and the alert statuses lets you tell a camera that needs a site visit from a routine "your timelapse is ready" message at a glance.

The three categories

Notifications are grouped into three categories, which are also the tabs on the Notifications page:

  • Projects — activity on your sites: a timelapse is ready, someone accepted an invitation, the first photo arrived, a project was shared with you.
  • Equipment — camera health: a camera has gone offline, a low battery, storage filling up, an SD card problem.
  • Platform — your account: a new invoice, a failed payment, a new device sign-in, and announcements.

Alert status

Equipment alerts carry a status so you know whether a problem is ongoing:

  • Active — the problem is happening now.
  • Recovered — the problem has cleared on its own (for example, a camera that went offline has come back).
  • Dismissed — the alert has been set aside.

Where you see notifications

The bell icon in the top-right shows your unread count and links to the full Notifications page. A camera's own alerts also appear in its Diagnostics view.

Good to know

  • Recovered alerts often resolve themselves, so an alert that has recovered usually needs no action, it is there for the record.
  • Equipment alerts are the ones that typically call for a site visit; project and platform notifications are usually informational.
  • You control which notifications you receive and how. See Choose which notifications you get.

Common questions

What's the difference between a notification and an alert? An alert is a specific equipment or account event with a status (active, recovered, dismissed). Notifications is the broader term for everything in your inbox, including project activity.

Do I need to act on every notification? No. Equipment alerts marked Active are the ones most likely to need attention. Many notifications are simply informational.
